Best NYE Evah!

I had just seen Jason Isbell at the Ryman in Nashville and thought it couldn't be topped. Was looking to get out of Atlanta for NYE so we went to Louisville for the show and stayed right near the Palace. First big surprise, Shovels and Rope played an extended opening set which was great. I'd only seen them at festivals with a half hour or so to do their thing. They have enough material now and have really grown as a songwriting team and performers so this was a treat and a great start. Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit were fantastic. His most recent album at the time, Southeastern (correctly) got rave revues but I have loved his songwriting since he was with the Drive By Truckers. Whats most impressive is how much he has grown as a frontman live. His voice is stronger and his interaction with the audience so much stronger than 4 to 5 years ago. Along with what looks like his confidence, is the 400 Unit's growth as a band. Its got to be very cool to be in a band with one of the most prolific songwriters of the era and they appear to have been working their asses off because they are tight-as-hell and sound great. These wonderful songs really come alive live and the they are on a roll right now in terms of both the song quality and the performance. This is the best value for your concert $$$ around at the moment.
